As more and more people are beginning to say YES to more natural alternatives to their health and wellness, essential oils are becoming the answer that many have been looking for. We know that, although there is definitely a place for modern medicine, we are learning that there are a number of common ailments and physical discomforts that can be managed naturally with essential oils, and this "trend" isn't going away anytime soon.
So, what exactly are essential oils? There are aromatic compounds found in plants that help plants survive, ward off pests and stay healthy. These oils can be round in the roots, stems, bark, leaves, flowers and seeds of plants and have a variety of physical, mental and emotional benefits.
Essential oils are very potent, meaning that they are quite strong and only need to be used in small amounts. They are much more potent than herbs, so a little goes a long way. As an example, did you know that 1 drop of peppermint oil is equivalent to 28 cups of peppermint tea? These oils are powerful, yet they can do so much!
Before using essential oils, it's important to understand how to choose a good quality oil. This is important, because unfortunately, there isn't a regulating body overseeing the ingredients that go into the bottles that you see on the shelves. This means that consumers are often assuming that they are purchasing 100% "pure" essential oils, when in fact; most of the ingredients in the bottle are synthetic (fake) ingredients, toxins and fillers.
A good quality essential oil is sourced from the part of the world where the plant naturally grows and thrives. The soil conditions and climate are ideal for the plant to survive, and the farmers are intimately connected with these plants, how to take care of them, when to harvest, etc.
Make sure that the oil has been tested multiple times, to ensure that there are no fillers, toxins and foreign material that would compromise the oil. Third party testing ensures unbiased protocols, and the oils that travel to the consumer are safe, pure and therapeutic.
High-quality oil is potent and is to be used sparingly as a result of its strength. While some brands of essential oils are "watered down" and diluted with fillers and other synthetic ingredients, real pure essential oils are full strength and don't require as many drops in order to enjoy similar effects.
So, what are some of the benefits of essential oils?
There are so many more benefits than what I am able to share here, but here are some of the more common ways in which these oils support health and wellness:
Increased energy
Improved sleep
Digestive relief
Lessens and/or eliminates pain
Supports focus and concentration
Relieves sore joints and muscles
Reduces stress
Improves mood
Replaces household cleaners and skin care products
Think about some of the daily products that you use for some of these examples. In which areas would you be open to trying a more natural approach? The great thing about these oils is that there are no side effects, just side benefits, so your entire body reaps the rewards of these beautiful oils. I encourage you to learn more about how essential oils can support a greater sense of well-being in your life and in your home. You'll be glad you did!
